The LOTTERIA Bibim Rice Burger is a burger built with rice buns instead of bread, holding a bulgogi seasoned beef patty, a fried egg, lettuce, onion and gochujang sauce. It is $9.49 and 680 calories, served in store at our Fullerton restaurant.

The buns are pressed rice rather than bread. They hold together in the hand like a bun does, but they eat closer to a rice dish, which is the whole idea. Inside is a bulgogi seasoned beef patty, a fried egg, lettuce and onion, with gochujang sauce running through it.

If that combination sounds familiar, it should. Beef, egg, vegetables and gochujang over rice is bibimbap, and this sandwich is that bowl rebuilt so you can carry it. The gochujang brings a moderate chili heat, warmer than the bulgogi side of the menu and rounder than the chili on our chicken sandwiches.

LOTTERIA first put a rice burger on its Korean menu in 1999, so this format is not a novelty item. At $9.49 it is the one to order when you want the meal that is least like an American burger.

Rice, pressed into bun shape, in place of a bread bun. They hold the burger together the way a bread bun does but eat softer and more neutral, which is what lets the bulgogi patty, the fried egg and the gochujang sauce carry the flavor.
